TOS ... Terms of Service

ramble mode=[on]

I have signed up for lots of sponsor programs over the years and one thing I ALWAYS do is read each and every word of the terms of every sponsor program I sign up with. I don't care if the program is run by someone I trust with my housekeys, I still read the terms of their program BEFORE I sign up. The TOS is the agreement you are making with the person who's going to pay you. If you don't like what you see in a TOS, don't sign up for the program. As mentioned by others, if you don't understand something, ASK FIRST. Here's a real example I had. The TOS said Absolutely NO text links yet encouraged you to put text under the banners. Well, technically, it's a text link even when it's with a banner. so, to avoid later confusion I asked first if what they meant was no text links unless with a banner. They answered yes and I'm sure they thought I'd lost it. BUT, if I hadn't asked, there was the chance that later it'd be a problem. Asking first, even when I was pretty sure I knew the answer, avoided any confusion later.

As a side note, how quick they answer your question will often give you an idea of how responsive they are in general.

Admittedly, many programs have TOS that could have been written better. Some presume that the person signing up understands the basic rules of the game when the people signing up are often new. Lately I've been wondering if the fact that so many new webmasters don't have English as a first language causes a problem. Would love to hear some other opinions on this one. New or old, English speaking or not, when you agree to a TOS then you've given your word you will follow them. When you're no longer comfortable with a programs TOS, drop their ads. In most cases, it's that simple.
